the Artist

Growing up in the Northwest I was in awe of the beauty of the rivers and landscape.

I would ponder for hours why a scene might seem bland one day and the next be pure magic. Perhaps I was able to store some of the answers away for paintings. Rivers are a magnet, many of my paintings include them. My husband is an avid fly fisherman and eventually got me "hooked" also. Searching out new rivers to fish and paint is a great pleasure to us both.

After studying commercial art and technical illustration in college, I continued my art education with a classically trained artist in California, Larry Gluck. Then the passion to paint outdoors caught hold.  As one artist put it “Painting from life is a pursuit unlike any other painting technique, it challenges artists to concentrate every sensory nerve on the information in front of them. They absorb it all, from sight to sound, from temperature to atmosphere, and then channel those feelings from head to hand, re-creating the vision in paint on paper or canvas".

Outdoor painting for me is just a beginning rather than an end, a time to perfect my drawing, painting and observation skills.  Larger studio paintings provide opportunity to refine, emphasize or eliminate the elements gathered from field paintings. Each successful painting appears to take on a life of its own and sets its own direction.
